Winter tyre use in the UK is rising as more and more people realise the benefits of having a softer compound rubber during the cold months. Below 7 degrees centigrade (November ~ March) the rubber in normal summer tyres hardens causing them to slip when cornering, braking or even trying to drive up an incline, whereas winter tyres are designer to work in these colder months, giving grip when it is most needed. I have seen a peugeot 207 fitted with winter tyres going up a hill in Sompting that a 4x4 had not been able to go up. Should we also have a few weeks of snow, then winter tyres are an even greater benefit.
