Identity Fraud
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Identity Fraud, in its report reviewing progress to tackle identity fraud, has called on the Government and businesses to take further action. The report reviews the steps taken since the Group published its 2007 report. The key findings of the report include: 1. The Information Commissioner should be given the funding and powers to act as the UK’s identity fraud tsar. 2. Businesses are failing to understand their responsibility to protect personal information. 3. Continued efforts to raise awareness and understanding are essential to tackling identity fraud and achieving cultural change. 4. The credit crunch is leading identity fraudsters to focus on attacking existing accounts rather than attempting to set up accounts in false names placing personal bank accounts at greater risk. 5. The London 2012 Olympic Games will provide a significant opportunity for identity fraudsters - both Government and 2012 organisers must take these threats into consideration during the early planning stages for the Games.
