Cocktails - a definition

02/06/2020

Cocktails – a definition. We all know what they are sort of. They’re usually colourful drinks with a kick like a mule made from all manner of ordinary and exotic ingredients. Right? And indeed I was researching this very subject a few months ago in order to prepare my presentation “Everything you wanted to know about cocktails, but were afraid to ask” for a local corporate function. I was surprised to find that there isn’t a standard industry definition. So I’ve come up with my own. Some say it’s an alcoholic mixed drink with 2 or more ingredients, one of which is a spirit or liqueur. Others say it’s a drink with 3 ingredients. After careful consideration over the odd short cocktail admittedly, my definition of a cocktail then is that it is …..a mixed alcoholic drink with 2 or more alcoholic spirit and or liqueur ingredients. So by my definition, gin & tonic isn’t a cocktail, but whisky mac (whisky and ginger wine is.) Admittedly, by my definition then a screwdriver isn’t a cocktail. OK, so it is well known and it has a good name but vodka and orange a cocktail? Pleeease! Same goes for a Cuba Libre : Dark rum, bit of lime juice, topped up with coca-cola (other cabonated drinks are available !) That’s a rum and coke in my book. Why not start with 2 easy ones, here Anyway, enough of all definition business. We’ve got some party planning to do, so let’s crack on and get back to reading more liqorature !
