Orthotics
Orthotics is a speciality within the medical field concerned with the design, manufacture and application of orthoses. An orthosis is an externally applied device used to modify the structural and functional characteristics of the neuromuscular and skeletal system. An orthosis may control, guide or limit an extremity, joint or body segment to protect and/or assist the function of the body to provide easier movement or reduce pain. Orthotics combines knowledge of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and engineering. Orthoses can be used on any joints of the body for a variety of reasons.
