Part worn tyres

Part worn tyre specialists are popping up across the country, as people are looking for cheap options during the recession. Trading standards recently visited two part worn dealers and bought 45 tyres, all 45 tyres were illegal, as they did not have the part worn stamp on them, but worryingly 20 of the tyres were checked and found to be dangerous. I saw this for myself last week when a customer called me out as one of his tyres had blown, he had just had all four tyres replaced at a part worn depot for £80. I checked the 3 remaining tyres and found the following: tyre 1 had a screw still embedded in the shoulder ( A non repairable area). MOT failure. tyre 2 had a 20mm split in the tread (MOT failure) plus a hole right through the tread, with a small patch on the inside (This is not a British standard repair) tyre 3, Had 6mm of tread on the outside edge, but only 2mm tread on the inside edge. This was illegal to sell, as Part worn tyres must have a minimum of 3mm of tread. This means that this customer paid £80 for trash. This is why we at Hometyre, will not sell part worn tyres, they are not tyres from cars in Germany as many part worn dealers will tell you, they are tyres that have been removed from cars and sent for recycling, or are from crashed cars - where you cannot tell what impact damage has been done to the structure. My customer has now bought 4 new tyres and is much happier that he is now safe. Would you buy part worn brake pads? NO, so why buy part worn tyres, they are the only part of the car keeping you on the road.
