TRAM Power Ltd. (TPL) is a small and growing company specialising in sustainable tramway and light rail solutions for towns and cities suffering from congestion and pollution. TPL has developed and patented new technologies for afforable tramways and light rail systems. This includes the revolutionary City Class electric vehicle, which started as an academic paper, graduated to computer, laboratory and bench testing. A quarter size mock up was built, a slave vehicle tested and compared the City Class traction technology against conventional equipment. Finally a full size 29m long articulated prototype has been fully tested. To operate light rail vehicles, tracks are needed. The LR55 track system allows tracks to be installed in city streets without wholesale excavation and reconstruction. Not having to relocated under street utility equipment saves time, money and public exasperation. LR55 tracks have completed a battery of testing up to 80 tonne axle loading, and since March 1996 carrying Sheffield Supertramcars everyday without maintenance, replacing a section of conventional track which had failed in only one year.To power light rail vehicles and tramcars, TRAM Power has developed a new light weight over head power system, which has a lower cost and quicker installation than other systems, whilst having a low resistivity to reduce power losses in the over head line.TRAM Power is also helping in the promoting of new privately funded, commercially operated tramways, which do not need Central Government Grant to implement. This has included the detailed design of one system 19km long up to Planning Application Stage. Discussions on realisation are active.
