Time is right for Baxenden's new Landmark
Baxenden residents will have no time-keeping problems now a long-awaited clock has been erected in the heart of the village. The four and a half metre tall Albert pillar clock, with Baxenden imprinted across the top, has finally been erected in Southwood Gardens - more than 18 months after the idea first came up at an area council meeting. Local residents suggested having a focal point for the village, and area councillors took on board a number of ideas which could be achieved within their budget. Councillor John Griffiths said: 'We told residents we had £3000 to spend, and a landmark seemed to be what everybody wanted. We took the clock idea away to see if it was feasible and after a lot of searching we found a manufacturer who could make one within our budget. It was quite a long process to get to this stage due to limited funds but we are definitely happy with the outcome.' Big savings were made as the clock runs off a lithium battery, which lasts up to eight years. The final design was decided upon and Good Directions Ltd, based in Hampshire, was commissioned to make the clock. Councillor Griffiths said: 'Everyone was in favour. We think it will distinguish Baxenden as its own village, bringing identity to the area and providing a landmark for the residents. The Victorian-style clock also complements all the work previously done at the end of Southwood Drive.' Mr Alan Gingell, Sales and Operations Manager at Good Directions Ltd, said: 'It will provide a focal point for the community and as long as it is maintained, it can remain there indefinitely.'
