Environmental Business Scoops Eco Award
iT Showcase is a magazine which explores the role of IT in the construction sector. They also organise the IT Showcase area of Interbuild, the exhibition for the construction industry which is being held at the Birmingham NEC from October 26th-30th. iT Showcase are hosting their own awards at the exhibition for the third year and new environmental company BuilderScrap have just found out that they are winners in the Eco-IT Product category. BuilderScrap is a new online business which aims to initiate contact between companies in the construction industry and encourage them to use up each others surplus materials. The construction industry is currently responsible for 90 million tonnes of waste every year, which is approximately 20% of all UK waste. Users can upload their leftovers to the website, either online or via MMS technology. These are offered to other users either at a price or for free. This diverts waste from landfill and lowers the ever increasing costs of skip hire and landfill tax. Interbuild also hosts their own Eco and New Product Awards, of which BuilderScrap has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Eco Product category. The results are announced on Monday 27th October. As well as this, BuilderScrap is a finalist in the prestigious Green Apple Awards, which are presented at The House of Commons in November. Les Owens, Director of BuilderScrap, said that he is ‘immensely pleased with the whole team who have worked hard to get the website up and running. To be acknowledged by the receiving of this award at such an early phase of the project is something of which we are all really proud and hope to continue to receive recognition and awards for the hard work we are carrying out to reduce the tonnage sent to landfill by this industry as a whole’.
