Inglenook Fireplaces An inglenook or "chimney corner", is a small recess that lies adjacent to a fireplace. Inglenook fireplaces originated to serve as a partially enclosed hearth area, typically connected to a larger room. The hearth itself was used for cooking and its warm and comfortable alcove became a natural place for people to gather and pass the time. Kitchens became designed as separate rooms as building designs evolved, while inglenooks were retained and utilised in living rooms as intimate warming places within the larger rooms.
