Professional Cutting for Couture
This course offers an introduction to the creative process of professional cutting and construction techniques for dressmaking. It is particularly aimed at anyone who has an interest in female clothing and wants to understand the complexities of cut and construction. You will start with a basic understanding of dress from the 19th century onwards, looking at the changes in style and construction through the different periods and how dress couture changed the shape of the female body. Through practical demonstrations you will then be taken through an introduction to period 'Cutting on the stand'. This technique of cutting forms the basis of all creative designer-wear including the most modern wedding dresses, ball gowns and theatrical costumes. Through the cutting of a series of toile period bodices, skirts and sleeves of the 19th century, a period that saw the birth of couture dressmaking through the work of Charles Frederick Worth, you will explore specialist techniques in creating a silhouette, developing an eye for line and achieving the correct fit, feel and look. This course of study can 'stand alone' but is also particularly useful to students who have already completed the Introduction to corset making and want to cut a toile that will work over their vintage or fashion corset. Entry Requirements The course has been designed to be very 'hands on' and you must have dressmaking skills and be able to use a sewing machine. What you need to bring Notebook, ruler, pencil, rubber and a sewing kit containing: paper scissors, small pointed embroidery scissors, cutting shears, tape measure, pins, needles, white cotton thread.
