Canine Veterinary Physiotherapy

Canine physiotherapy is recognised in the prevention, cure and rehabilitation of many canine conditions. Following soft tissue injuries, fractures, trauma or surgery, physiotherapy is used to accelerate the rehabilitation process and restore function. Canine physiotherapy aims to restore proper movement, strength and function, reduce pain, swelling and inflammation and improve quality of life. When should physiotherapy commence? Physiotherapy is best commenced soon after the injury or surgery. This doesn't mean strenuous exercise! Gentle passive movements and hands on techniques reduce pain early, stimulate healing and improve circulation are essential, as well as reducing stiffness and preventing muscle atrophy. I regularly teach owners physiotherapy for their dog on discharge from the Vets or visit dogs in the home environment as often hazards such as slippery floors, stairs, incorrect bedding and exercise type/routines can be advised on. Often dogs are more relaxed at home and all members of the family can get involved. What conditions do we treat? -Arthritis, hip and elbow dysplasia -post operative spinal surgery, hip replacements, FHNE, cruciate repairs, fracture repair and various corrective surgeries -soft tissue injuries to muscle, tendon and ligaments -Many other conditions and surgeries which effect function, movement and quality of life in the short and long term Physiotherapy rehabilitation On the first visit, a full assessment will be carried out, the dog will receive treatment, and a rehabilitation plan will be given specific to your dogs needs. Follow up appointment will be made, and the number of sessions required will depend on the nature and severity of the condition. All patients require a vet referral prior to their first appointment. Regular contact with the vet ensures continuity of care and specific rehabilitation requirements are met. Cost Physiotherapy can often be claimed on pet insurance. The first appointment consists of an initial assessment, treatment and teaching of a specific home programme of massage, stretches and rehabilitation exercises tailored to each dog. Appointments are available at Moorview Referrals, Cramlington or at my treatment base in Welbury, Northallerton. I also regularly do home visits in and around Darlington and Northallerton but often travel further afield as required.
