Tyre problem solved where others had failed

08/06/2020

Today I was called out to a customer who had a flat tyre on his Jaguar. He had been to his local tyre depot 3 times telling them that it kept losing air, but they had been unable to find the problem. Today he woke up to find that the tyre was completely flat, so he decided to call Hometyre in the hope that we could solve the problem where the others had failed. I jacked the car up and removed the wheel, taking it back into my van. A check around the tyre did not show any obvious puncture, I checked the valve and the rim for leaks but didn't find anything. The next step was to remove the tyre from the rim and check around the inside of it. Again there was nothing to find. I then checked around the rim itself and found a hairline crack, this had been what was causing the problem. I added a sealer to the crack area and refitted the tyre, inflated it re-balanced the wheel and put it back on the car. Torqued the wheelnuts to the correct settings and lowered the car off the jack. This is only a temporary fix as the wheel needs to be welded or replaced. I explained this to the customer, who was glad to have the problem solved at last. He was going to look into getting the wheel welded, as soon as possible. I explained that this was something we could do for him as we have specialist aluminium welders that I can take too, but he declined as he has a friend who could do it for him.
