A Peaceful Self-Catering Holiday Home in ElginDarwin Cottage lies high up on the banks of the River Lossie on a hill overlooking Elgin City. It is a sunny cottage facing directly South and is tucked away amidst the peaceful grounds of Braemorriston House.The grounds are a haven for wildlife with hedgehogs, frogs, red squirrels, an abundance of wild birds and a few lucky pheasants. There are also occassional sitings of bird of prey, roe deer and foxes.The Cottage is the former home of the Head Gardener. Formerly it had a lean-to greenhouse on its South wall as does Down House in Kent, the former family home of Charles Darwin. Here were grown exotic fruit and flowers for the main House.The Cottage is situated directly alongside Braemorriston House- a magnificent, Listed Grade B, Georgian Mansion built by Admiral Duff in 1819 and later remodelled and enlarged by the renouned Scottish architect William Robertson.The entire Cottage is at ground level apart from the fun 'tower' room built into a raised turret. The cottage sleeps up to six with a twin bedroom and a double bedroom on the ground floor and a sofa-bed in the 'tower' which doubles as a games room for children when the adults need some peace. A travel cot, to sleep a young child, can be provided on request. There is a large lounge, a kitchen with dining facities, two WC's (one with a shower and the other with a bath), a large garden and private parking for up to two cars. Darwin Cottage was recently renovated to a high standard of decor and HMO certificate Health and Safety standards and is new to the holiday letting market this year, 2009. For the comfort of guests we operate a no smoking policy within the Cottage.Shops for essential supplies are two minute stroll from the cottage site and Elgin City, just 5 minutes walk away, offers a wide selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs.
