LightSpeed Derby is a cross-sector initiative working to make sure that Derby has a telecommunications infrastructure fit for the 21st Century, in order to underpin its economic and social development. It is based on the concept that a strong local partnership can provide the best possible market conditions for the speedy roll out of superfast broadband and for its exploitation by local business and public sector agencies. The role of LightSpeed Derby is not to itself install or manage a superfast broadband infrastructure, but rather to facilitate an attractive local market for broadband services that will encourage others to make the investment needed. Its aim is to marry the global expertise of major communications companies with the local knowledge of Derby's Stakeholders for mutual benefit. In other words, it is not primarily a telecommunications project, but a partnership project; to bring economic and social benefit to Derby's businesses and citizens
