FAQs

What is mystery shopping?

Mystery shopping involves hiring secret shoppers to evaluate the quality of customer experience in businesses like retailers, bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues. These shoppers act as typical customers to assess service, product offerings, and overall experience. Regular mystery shopping helps businesses understand and improve the customer journey by providing detailed feedback on real interactions, such as purchasing products, ordering online, or interacting with customer service. This valuable insight allows businesses to maintain high standards and ensure customer satisfaction.

What is mystery shopping used for?

Mystery shopping is used to assess specific areas of a business's operations. It can measure compliance, such as checking if a retailer adheres to the Challenge 25 policy for age-restricted goods. It's also used to evaluate sales processes, ensuring staff follow training and upsell techniques. Additionally, mystery shopping can assess competitors by reporting on their merchandise, offers, and sales practices. This provides valuable insights for businesses to improve their customer service, sales strategies, and competitive positioning.

What is a mystery shopper?

A mystery shopper selects assignments based on their availability, where they visit stores, ask questions, or assess service quality, just like any other customer. Afterward, they complete a questionnaire about their experience. Assignments may also include ordering groceries online and reporting on delivery services. Mystery shopping requires skills like attention to detail, reporting, and role-playing to help companies understand customer perceptions and improve their services.

Why businesses use our Challenge 25 age checking and age restriction testing service

Businesses use Centrebound's Challenge 25 age checking and age restriction testing service to improve compliance, reduce the risk of fines, and demonstrate proactive measures to prevent underage sales. It enhances management focus on legislation and identifies risk factors, with Centrebound providing actionable recommendations. Trusted by major UK brands, Centrebound delivers high-quality, bespoke services with reliable results. Each year, they conduct over 10,000 mystery shopping test purchases to ensure employees are performing age checks, supported by local authorities. Contact Centrebound to learn how they can help your organisation meet compliance challenges.

What is the Challenge 25 Policy?

The Challenge 25 Policy, introduced by the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group (RASG) in 2009, helps retailers comply with laws on selling alcohol to over-18s. It allows retailers to challenge young-looking customers to prove their age, requiring acceptable ID (e.g., PASS card, driving license, or passport). The scheme, also known as Think 25 or Check 25, extends to other age-restricted products like cigarettes, vapes, knives, and lottery tickets. This approach reduces confrontation and ensures compliance with age verification laws.

What is Challenge 25 Testing

Challenge 25 Testing helps businesses ensure compliance with laws on selling age-restricted products. Centrebound conducts over 10,000 independent tests annually in retail, hospitality, and home-delivery settings to verify if employees are conducting proper age checks. These mystery shopper tests cover a range of industries, including supermarkets, off-licenses, bookmakers, and hospitality venues. Using an independent company like Centrebound for these checks demonstrates serious commitment to compliance and provides valuable insights for improving staff training and operational procedures. The results help businesses reduce the risk of fines and enhance compliance with age-restriction laws.

Who Carries Out Age Restriction Testing?

Centrebound’s age restriction testing is conducted by mystery shoppers aged 18-24, who have their ages verified through official documentation like passports or PASS cards. These shoppers are trained to test whether employees properly follow the Challenge 25 scheme by asking for ID during purchases of age-restricted items. They report on whether ID was requested, providing valuable compliance data. For home-delivery services, young mystery shoppers include age-restricted items in their orders and assess if the delivery driver follows ID-checking policies. Centrebound tailors its services to meet specific client needs, helping improve compliance and employee training.

What Happens if a Business Fails Age Testing?

If a business fails age testing and is found to have sold age-restricted goods to minors, penalties vary by industry. For example, Tesco was fined £6,000 in 2009 and had a store's liquor license revoked for 28 days. In hospitality, penalties include cautions, a £90 Fixed Penalty Notice, unlimited fines, and potential suspension of personal licences. Repeated offences can lead to temporary closures or prosecution, with fines up to £20,000. Beyond legal consequences, failing age testing can damage a business's reputation, leading to loss of customer trust and long-term harm to the business model.

How Centrebound Can Help

Centrebound helps businesses selling age-restricted goods comply with the law through mystery shopping age restriction testing. Our vetted shoppers purchase restricted items and check if ID was requested. This service helps organisations ensure compliance across stores, venues, and home delivery services, reducing the risk of fines and license suspensions. We cover all age-restricted goods, including alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, and knives. Age checks can be integrated with other compliance assessments to identify areas for improvement. Regular testing increases staff awareness and management focus on underage sales laws, leading to better overall performance. Contact us to enhance your compliance efforts.
