Business profile
Welcome to Glasgow Gutters – Your Local Gutter Experts
Glasgow Gutters is a local gutter business based in Paisley, run by Glen McGill. We work on houses and buildings across Glasgow and the surrounding towns, and most of our time goes into fitting new gutters. We also do gutter cleaning, gutter repair and gutter installation work of all kinds. We answer questions straight, turn up when we say we will, and leave your property tidier than we found it. If you've landed here, there's a fair chance something's already gone wrong. Maybe water is spilling over the front of the house every time it rains. Maybe there's a dark patch spreading down the wall by the back door. Or maybe you've just bought an older place and the gutters look like they've been up since before you were born. Whatever it is, we've probably seen it before, and we can usually tell you fairly quickly what's needed and what isn't. Why gutters matter so much in the west of Scotland Anyone who lives round here knows the weather doesn't do things by halves. We get long spells of steady drizzle, then days where the rain comes in sideways off the Clyde and doesn't stop until the next morning. Gutters and downpipes take the brunt of all that. On a typical roof, a single heavy downpour can send a surprising amount of water towards the gutters in a short time, and all of it has to go somewhere. When the system is working, you barely notice it. The water runs off the roof, along the gutter, down the pipe and away. When it isn't working, the water finds its own route, and it's usually a bad one. It pours over the edge and soaks the wall below. It drips behind the fascia and rots the timber. It pools at the base of the house, splashes back up onto the brickwork or render, and after a few winters you start to see damp creeping in on the inside walls, flaking paint, or that musty smell in a corner of the bedroom that never quite goes away. Moss is the other big one. Our climate is ideal for it. It grows happily on slate and concrete tiles, then breaks off in clumps and washes straight into the gutters. Add in leaves from the trees along most residential streets, plus whatever the birds bring, and you've got a gutter that's half full of sludge by the end of autumn. A blocked gutter holds water, gets heavy, starts to sag, and eventually the joints give way. A lot of the new gutter jobs we do started out as a blockage that nobody got round to sorting. New gutters: our main line of work Fitting new gutters is the part of the job we enjoy most. It's also where we can make the biggest difference to a house. A good new system, properly sized and set at the right fall, should quietly do its job for a long time with nothing more than the odd clean. So how do you know if you need new gutters rather than a repair? Here are the signs we look for when we come out: Sections that are sagging or pulling away from the fascia, even after the brackets have been adjusted. Cracks and splits running along the length of the gutter, not just at a single joint. Old cast iron that's rusted through in places, or has been patched so many times there's more sealant than metal. Plastic that's gone brittle and faded after years of sun and frost. Gutters that were simply too small for the roof in the first place, which is more common than you'd think on extensions and dormer conversions. And downpipes that have been knocked, cracked or disconnected so the water just dumps onto the path. If it's one or two of those in a small area, a repair might be the sensible answer, and we'll tell you so. If it's all along the house, or the system is old enough that fixing one bit just moves the problem to the next, new gutters usually make more sense. We'd rather give you an honest view than talk you into a bigger job than you need. What happens when we fit new gutters The first step is a visit. Glen or one of the team will come out, have a proper look at the roof edge, the fascias and the downpipes, and ask you a few questions. Where does water overflow? Is there damp inside? Has anyone worked on the gutters before? Your answers often tell us as much as the ladder does. We'll measure up, check where the water needs to go, and look at whether the existing outlets and downpipes are in the right places. Sometimes a house needs an extra downpipe to cope with the amount of rain it gets, especially on a long run or a steep roof. Sometimes the fascia behind the old gutter is rotten, and we'll point that out so there are no surprises later. Then we'll talk you through the options, including the style and colour of the new system, so it suits the house rather than looking like an afterthought. On the day of the job, we take the old gutters down carefully and clear everything away. The new brackets go up at the right spacing and the right fall, so water runs towards the outlets instead of sitting in the middle. We fit the gutter lengths, joints, corners and stop ends, connect up the downpipes, and then test the whole thing by running water through it. If something isn't flowing the way it should, we sort it before we leave, not after you ring us in the first storm. Once it's done, we'll walk round with you and show you what we've done. We'll also mention anything we spotted along the way that you might want to keep an eye on, like a slipped slate or a patch of moss that's building up on one side of the roof. Gutter cleaning For a lot of people, a clean is all they need, and it's worth doing before the problem gets worse. We clear out the moss, leaves, silt and anything else that's settled in the gutters, then check the downpipes are running freely. A blocked downpipe is easy to miss from the ground, but it'll make a clean gutter overflow within minutes of the rain starting. Many of our customers book a clean once a year, often in late autumn after the leaves have come down, and some with big trees nearby book more often. While we're up there, we'll let you know if we see anything loose, cracked or leaking, so a clean often catches small faults before they turn into a bigger bill. Gutter repair Not every problem needs a full replacement. Leaking joints, a cracked section, a bracket that's snapped, a downpipe that's come loose from the wall: these are all things we fix regularly. A drip from one joint might not sound like much, but water hitting the same spot on a wall for months on end will cause damage. We'll find where the leak is actually coming from, which isn't always where the water appears, and fix it properly. Gutter installation Separate from replacing old systems, we also install gutters where there weren't any before, or where the layout needs changing. That includes extensions, garages, porches, garden rooms and outbuildings, as well as properties where someone has altered the roof and the old guttering no longer fits. It's the same careful approach as with new gutters: measure it right, set the fall right, send the water where it should go. Where we work We're based in Paisley and cover a good spread of the west of Scotland. That includes Glasgow itself, from tenements and terraces in the city to semis and bungalows further out, along with Paisley, Bishopbriggs, Cambuslang, Clydebank, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride and Newton Mearns. Each area has its own quirks. Older sandstone properties in parts of Glasgow and Paisley often still have original cast iron gutters that have been painted over many times and are now struggling. Around Bishopbriggs and Newton Mearns you'll find plenty of houses with mature trees in the garden, which means more leaves and more frequent blockages. In Cumbernauld and East Kilbride there's a lot of housing from a similar period, so we often see the same wear and tear on house after house as the original plastic systems reach the end of their life. Clydebank and Cambuslang sit close to the river, and properties that catch the wind and rain coming up the valley tend to put their gutters through a harder time than most. Knowing these patterns helps us work faster and quote more accurately. If you're not sure whether we come out to your street, give us a ring and ask. If you're nearby, we'll usually be able to help. If you'd like to see more about what we do before getting in touch, you can find affordable gutter services in Glasgow (https://glasgowgutters.co.uk/) on our website, along with more information on each of our services. Opening hours and booking We're open Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM, and closed on Sundays. The easiest way to book is to phone us on 014 1266 0185. Tell us what's happening, whether it's water pouring over the front, a sagging section at the back, or just a general worry that the gutters haven't been looked at in years, and we'll arrange a time to come out. It helps if you can tell us roughly what type of property it is, how many storeys, and where the problem seems to be. If you've got a photo from the ground, even better. None of that is essential though. If you don't know what's wrong, that's what we're for. We know people are often working during the day, which is why we're open on Saturdays too. If you need to be home for the visit, just let us know and we'll try to fit around you. For most outside jobs you don't need to be in at all, as long as we can get access to the sides and back of the house. If you'd like to check where we are before calling, you can find our gutter team in Glasgow on Google Maps (https://maps.app.goo.gl/V3UdVCteKL5XX43A7), which also shows directions to our base in Paisley. A few honest words before you ring Gutters aren't anyone's favourite thing to spend money on. They're not like a new kitchen, and nobody's going to compliment you on them. But when they fail, they can cause damage that costs far more to put right than the gutters ever would have: rotten fascias, damp walls, stained render, even problems with foundations and drains if water keeps pooling in the same place. That's why we'd always encourage people to get things looked at sooner rather than later. Sometimes all you need is a clean and a check. Sometimes a quick repair will buy you years. And sometimes the kindest thing we can tell you is that the old system has done its time and new gutters will save you hassle in the long run. Whichever it is, you'll get a straight answer from us. If the rain's been getting the better of your gutters this year, give us a call and we'll come and take a look. Glasgow Gutters 4 Hawkhead Ave Paisley PA2 7BT Phone: 014 1266 0185
