Development collaboration at Cardiff UWIC for EJG
The Product Design Programme at UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art Design is engaged by EJG Design and Quorus Ltd to design the new range of handheld site measurement devices for professional and consumer markets. CARDIFF, Nov 23rd, 2006, -- EJG Design and Quorus announced today that University Wales Institute of Cardiff (UWIC), one of the leading product design courses in the UK, has been engaged to develop the new SiteScope and HomeScope range of handheld digital-optical measurement devices. EJG are completing worldwide Patents for the new devices that can accurately measure interior and exterior sites with great accuracy in a few seconds. Quorus Ltd, specialists in market acceleration and European development projects, are working with the Company and anticipate wider transnational collaboration with technology partners in Eastern Europe for electronics development and manufacture next year. Design development work at UWIC started in October and involves students in the second year of the degree level course as well as lecturers. Initially based on the first EJG theoretical prototype, UWIC have created over 80 further concept designs, which will be reduced down to 10 or 15 final designs to be taken forward to working prototype stage. From early next year, and working hand in hand with EJG’s electronics and software partners, UWIC students will have the chance to see first hand the subsequent industrial process from completed design to industrial manufacture. Speaking about the work at UWIC, EJG’s founder and the products’ inventor, Elliot Gray, said “Thetrouble with spending Five years working on a project is that you become focused on how the thing is going to work. Having the students involved has already reenergised the design process and set me thinking along new lines in the functionality of SiteScope. It is amazing how well the students have worked with the idea behind SiteScope even though they have no grounding in either electronics or surveying”. Robin Rowland Hill, MD of Quorus said, “The potential for fast track design development at UWIC, the potential for transnational partnerships and the availability of EU financial support gives new hope for technology product businesses struggling against lack of skill and resources for their projects”. Senior Lecturer at UWIC, Gareth Barham went on to say, “We are delighted to be involved with this exciting project. The collaboration with EJG Design and Quorus with the student’s projects brings additional knowledge and experience to their learning. In return our students, who have developed great creativity skills, are able to make a positive contribution to the direction and development of the project.” This design project is expected to take six months altogether at UWIC, as well as lead to further involvement by students as the designs go in to manufacture from the end of the next year for the professional sector. It is hoped that the range designed for the DIY market will follow a few months later. _________________________________________________ About EJG Design Ltd.
