I am an artisan felter, living in Argyll, Scotland. I work primarily with merino fleece as most people find this comfortable to wear. In my felt art, where the finished product will not be in contact with skin, I enjoy the opportunity of using other native breeds for their nature colours and added textures. Hats and wraps are the main lines in my wearable collections, ranging from everyday wear to special occasion. All hats can be made to measure and everything can be commissioned and therefore created to the customers specification. Each item is individual, due to the nature of the process. The only thing mass produced is the wool on the backs of the sheep. All felt is laid from the fleece, allowing complete freedom in colour blending. This process is all freehand, guided only by eye. The felting is completed by hand also meaning that each piece has the freedom the move, to find its form. With my formal hats, the final shape of the hat with largely be dictated by the way the fabric has formed, obviously I can control this to an extent but felting is a natural process and as such likes to have a mind of its own.
