Business profile
James Selway was born in a small village in South Wales and returns there frequently. He studied for three years at Swansea College of Art and later at Trinity College, Carmarthen. He was appointed Head of art Department at a Midlands Secondary School and later Head of Art at a Secondary School in London where he lead a team of tutors in an extremely successful art department teaching students to advanced level. He later became Deputy Headmaster. After many years in London, James moved to East Anglia and continued working as a painter which included many commissioned works. These included a large painting of the 'Annunciation' which is on permanent display at the Roman Catholic National Shrine at Walsingham, Norfolk, design work for Southwark Cathedral and numerous commissions for churches in the UK and abroad. James moved to live near Barcelona, Spain in 2001 and now lives in the Catalan countryside close to the foothills of the Pyrenees. His artistic ability was soon recognised by the art world of the area and he was quickly offered exhibitions in highly reputable galleries throughout Spain. His paintings are now in much demand throughout Europe and included in many private collections in Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, Australia, the United States and the UK. James normally exhibits in various prestigious galleries in the UK and throughout Spain. From his base in Barcelona he travels throughout Spain, the South of France and into Italy in search of suitable subject matter for his work. However, he still holds a strong bond with his native Britain, returning at times to include aspects of his home country in his portfolio of work. The themes of his work are also wide-ranging and include landscapes and cityscapes, figures and natural forms, normally painted in oil, acrylic and watercolour. (A Catalan art critic wrote below)...... At the gallery, we can see the most recent work of James Selway, an artist from Wales who arrived in Catalonia in 2001 and from this area he found much artistic inspiration. Observing his work, at the very first sight, we find much light, strength and impulsive energy. Also displayed is a freshness of form and the enormous vitality behind each of his paintings. His love of nature is emotionally expressed and light is a principal element in his work. Through his paintings he demonstrates his huge universe: landscapes, streets, the expressions and details on the faces of his characters which bring them so close to reality, his plant life and interesting urban areas.Different aspects, different images, which all lead us to the same certain place: the painter's soul, which is obviously both creative and emotional. Both aspects are combined in such a way that in his images, apart from the obvious energy, there is a life which goes beyond the brush-strokes
