Daylilies and other perennials for sale.
Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are extremely tough and resiliant perennials. They will tolerate a wide range of conditions including drought, although for maximum peformance an organic rich, open structured, well drained, moisture retentive soil is ideal. The plants would benefit from a feed and mulch in spring.The daylilies we produce are sold bare rooted. This means that most of the soil that they were grown in will have been cleaned away from the plants prior to dispatch to the customer. In addition, most of the foliage will have been removed from the plants to help them establish in their new home. What the customer does on receipt of the plants depends on the time of year.Between October and April, open the package immediately and soak the roots for 2 to 3 hours in water. Then either pot them up individually in pots just a bit larger than the root system, in a suitable compost for planting out later, or plant out 18" apart in a suitable position straight away, with the crowns resting on or just below the soil surface. Then water them well and leave to develop. Do not plant out if the ground is waterlogged, frozen or if heavy frost is expected.Between May and August, open the package immediately and soak the roots for 2 to 3 hours in water. Then pot them up individually in pots just a bit larger than the root system, in a suitable compost, water well, and place in a shady location. Keep the compost just moist, and the plants growing in the pots for at least 3 weeks prior to planting out in their permanent positions. When planting out, their crowns should be resting on or just below the soil surface. Plant 18" apart. Water them well, and periodically in dry weather until established. However, take care not to overwater during this period as the fine root systems need to develop during the establisment period.Depending on the variety and time of planting, daylilies may or may not flower in their first season after planting.Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries regarding cultivation.
