Winter tyres (Snow tyres)
There is a big misconception in the UK that winter tyres are only for use in the snow, this is not right. Winter tyres are for use anywhere where the temperature drops below 7 degrees Celsius. ( In the UK this is generally November through to March). In the colder months the rubber in normal summer tyres hardens, causing skiding when cornering or braking. Winter tyres have a different rubber compound that stays soft in these lower temperatures, giving better grip on the road. Plus should we get a few weeks of snow, then winter tyres come into their own, as the additional sipes (Splits in the tread) allow for extra traction ( See photo of a summer Vs a winter tyre). I have seen a Peugeot 206 with winter tyres going up an incline in the snow, that a 4x4 could not get up.
