From the standpoint of the householder there are only five elements which make up good design. The essential five elements may be present in your garden. If so leave alone and create new interest by introducing different plants rather than by changing the basic design. For many however change is necessary because one or more of the vital elements are missing: The garden must provide a suitable home for the plants you have chosen so that they can thrive. The garden must be labour saving unless you have lots of time to spare or else lots of money to have someone do the work for you. The garden must appeal strongly to you and your family. The garden must not cost more to create or maintain than you can afford.
