Tours of the battlefields of Cassino and Anzio under the guidance of a former British Army infantry officer. Participants will have the opportunity to study in detail the pertinent events of the four battles at Cassino that led to the eventual successful breakthrough in May 1944. Those wishing to stay in Italy for an additional period can study the Allied landings at Anzio in January 1944, the subsequent horrors experienced during the stalemate and the euphoria of the final breakout in May 1944. They can also assess the merits of Lt Gen Mark Clark's decision to switch his Fifth Army from blocking the escape of the German Tenth Army from Cassino to a rush to be the first commander to capture Rome from the south in centuries.The tours are designed for the military history enthusiast who would like to witness the ground over which the Allies fought and the operational and tactical methods that they employed with varying degrees of success.
