Preston SurgSoc has had an exciting year, growing massively as a society and is now a recognised student society of The University of Manchester We have also been shortlisted for the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh Student Surgical Society of the Year Award 2012 Throughout the year we have already hosted larger events such as an Orthopaedic Day for 100 students sponsored by Stryker, a Laparoscopic Skills Day for 30 students sponsored by Ethicon and Karl Storz, and a Trauma Day for 40 students, including simulation suite and chest drain workshops Whilst our events are open to all medical students at the University of Manchester, we specifically aim to support and encourage the 200 students based at the Royal Preston Hospital for their clinical years In June 2011 we hosted our first National Undergraduate Surgical Conference for 120 students, 10 of which were local sixth formers interested in applying to medicine
